Data Processing: Size Matters

An article about University of Illinois signing a $188 million supercomputer deal with Cray Inc. came out this month and a lot of people were amazed by the huge amount of data that these supercomputers can process. Computer processing is growing incredibly fast as the university is using 1.5 petabytes of information each day and a capacity of 500 petabytes.

500 petabytes! If you have no inkling of how enormous that data is, you can start computing in quadrillion bytes. Search engines like Google process an approximate of 24 petabytes every single day; that should give you an idea of how big a petabyte is.

But that is nothing compared to what IBM is planning to launch for Netherlands’ Foundation for Research in Astronomy. The $2.1 billion deal is talking not about supercomputers but about “exascale” computers. An exascale compute is a machine that can process an exabyte of data each day. And what is an exabyte? Just about 1000 petabytes; yes, start multiplying quadrillion bytes by one thousand.

You probably know how much information is being processed in the internet on a daily basis. Well, an exabyte is twice as much that information. Colossal is an understatement! But it appears mankind isn’t happy with that yet, we’re just getting started.

The National Security Agency is planning to build a $2 billion facility in Utah that will process and store the entire agency’s data. We’re talking yottabyte of information to be stored in this facility. What is a yottabyte you may ask? It’s just equivalent to quadrillion gigabytes and just about the ceiling for data measurement (for now) as no word has been coined yet for the next higher degree. With this staggering amount of data comes a plan for a highly productive computer that can execute a petaflop. Petaflop is a term coined for quadrillion operations in a second.

These are indeed mind-blowing pieces of information and some people might be thinking what kind of technology these computer makers will be using to be able to efficiently process data as big as the ones previously mentioned. The power alone is staggering – 200 megawatts – which can power up to 200,000 homes. So how on earth can an enormous and yet efficient machine be built and maintained?

Knowing that the more data you store in your computer means using up essential resources that if depleted, may mean poor performance, it would be interesting to see how the abovementioned projects will come to life. When it comes to data processing, size does matters and you’ve probably had a dose of irritating problems that come with processing huge amounts of data.

Just think that with personal computers, many users already experience poor PC performance with just hundreds and maybe less gigabytes of data. Some users often find themselves using optimization tools such as PC Speed Up to improve their computer’s speed and performance.

Now we’re talking thousands and quadrillions of gigabytes. It’s safe to assume that these supercomputers and exascale computers will have (should have) their own built-in optimization tools so as to avoid performance issues in the future.

StartDial – Open the iPhone’s Phone App to a Specific Page Every Time

StartDial, developed by FilippoBiga and available for free from the BigBoss repository in Cydia, allows you to start your Phone app on the page of your choice (Favorites, Recents, Contacts, Keypad, or Voicemail). If, for instance, you typically use the keypad, you can set your start page as Keypad and every time you open the Phone app the Keypad page will open. If you prefer to select phone numbers from your contact list, you can set the start page to Contacts. In addition, you have the option to disable the voicemail page; a reasonable option for those security concerned users.

Steps (once your iPhone is jailbroken):
1. Open Cydia
2. Search for “StartDial”
3. Download the tweak and when prompted by Cydia, respring your iPhone.
4. Congratulations! StartDial should now be installed on your device.

How to remove StartDial:
1. Open Cydia
2. Search for “StartDial”
3. In the upper right-hand corner, select the “Modify” button.
4. When asked to “Reinstall” or “Remove”, select “Remove”
5. When prompted by Cydia, respring your iPhone.
6. Once the iPhone has resprung, StartDial should no longer be present.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 4S & iPad 2 (Windows, Mac, Linux)

Ever since the December release of @pod2g‘s “corona” untether for iOS 5.x on A4 and earlier devices, all eyes have been on the attempts to extend it to the A5 devices: the iPhone4S and iPad2. Due to the combined efforts of @pod2g and members of the iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team, the iOS 5 jailbreak for A5 devices has been released. The application; Absinthe.

The supported firmware versions are:
- iPhone4S: 5.0 (9A334), 5.0.1 (9A405) and the “other” 5.0.1 (9A406)
- iPad2: 5.0.1 (9A405)

iPhone4S owners looking to maximize their chances of achieving an eventual software-based carrier unlock should be staying at 5.0. Everyone else should be at 5.0.1. If you’re an iPhone4S owner who already updated to 5.0.1, it’s too late to go back down to 5.0, but if you’re on 9A406 it is possible to downgrade the baseband by going to the 9A405 version of 5.0.1 while the window is still open.

Steps:
1. Download Absinthe - http://greenpois0n.com/?p=173
2. Open the .ZIP file and extract the Absinthe application.
3. Plug the iPhone 4S or iPad 2 into the computer.
4. Open Absinthe and unlock your device if it has a passcode.
5. In Absinthe, click the “Jailbreak” button.
6. Once complete, unlock your device, open the Absinthe icon.
6a. If the Absinthe webclip shows “Error establishing a database connection”, go to Settings, turn on VPN and wait instead. Toggle VPN only AFTER Absinthe says it’s done, or it will not work. VPN SHOULD error and then reboot soon. If it does not, rerun Absinthe!
7. Congratulations! Cydia should now be installed on your device

FIX Sony Vegas Low Memory Error on Render

The Sony Vegas rendering suite is incredibly popular among amateurs and professionals alike. However, it is notorious for providing the user with rendering errors. The most well-known being, “The system is low on memory. You may be able to reduce memory usage by closing other applications.”

On a 64-bit machine, this is due to the fact that all editions of Vegas below Professional do not support more than 2GB of memory (i.e., they are 32-bit applications, not 64-bit). To solve this issue, download a free program, 4GB Patch, developed by NTCore, and browse for the Sony Vegas executable file. Typically this file will be stored in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0

The last folder will be named whatever version of Sony Vegas you have installed and the file that you will need to select will have the Sony Vegas icon.

Once you select the application, 4GB Patch will make the necessary changes and Vegas will then be capable of accessing up to 4GB of memory.

How to Recalibrate (Refresh) iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad Home Button

After an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad has been used for some time, the home button may begin to seem unresponsive or slow. While this may be due to a hardware issue (the device may have been dropped, damaging internal hardware), it’s worth a shot to recalibrate the device’s home button.

To recalibrate the home button, follow these steps:

1. Open a pre-installed app (e.g., Stocks, Calendar, Weather, Calendar, etc.).
2. Hold down the power button until the “Slide to Power Off” option appears.
3. Hold down the home button until the application quits.

  1. Plug your device into your computer and open DiskAid.
  2. In the left-hand navigation pane, under the “Music & Videos” tab select “Music” (or whichever media you wish to transfer).

Otherwise, if you only want to transfer a select number of items, select which items you want transferred by holding the “Ctrl” key (Windows) or “Command” key (Mac) and select each item.   4. When asked what you would like to copy, select your preferences. If you only chose to transfer a select number of songs (or other media), choose the “Only Selected Media” option. If you’d like the media to be copied directly into iTunes select “To iTunes” when asked “Where would you like to copy?” Alternatively, you can transfer the media to a folder on your computer or external drive by selecting “To a folder of my choice” and browse for which folder you would like the media to be transferred to.
  5. Finally you will be asked which library data you would like imported. It’s suggested to leave the default options selected and import all data (playlists, ratings, play counts, last played dates). Click “Next” and DiskAid will begin importing your media. Remember, this copies the media; it won’t remove it from your device.

Multi-Channel Memory Technology:
