How to Jailbreak iOS 4

The revolutionary new iPhone/iPod Touch operating system, iOS 4, has been successfully jailbroken using Redsn0w. Here’s how:

1. Download Redsn0w for Mac OS X or for Windows

2. Connect your device to your computer and shut it off (slide to shut down)

3. Download the corresponding iOS 4 firmware for your iDevice from the “Downloads” section of TechGeec.com

4. Open Redsn0w and browse for the firmware that you downloaded. Select “Next”

5. Select which features you’d like to be installed with the jailbreak (certain devices cannot have multitasking, homescreen wallpaper, or battery percentage so enabling those features gives that device the features)

6. Click “Next” twice and prepare to put your iDevice into DFU Mode

7. On the screen that shows you what to do to put your device in Recovery Mode:
Hold power button for 3 seconds
While still holding the power button, hold the home button for 10 seconds
While still holding the home button, release the power button and continue holding the home button for 30 seconds

8. Congratulations! Once your device reboots you should have Cydia on your home screen.

Feel free to leave a comment below stating what your favorite feature of iOS 4 is, if you enjoy jailbreaking, if you’ve had any problems, or any other sort of feedback, and please, share this post and TechGeec.com with your friends.

New Verizon iPhone Picture Leaked

There has been much news lately about an upcoming Verizon Wireless iPhone. Talks of the Verizon iPhone have been circulating since last year, if not longer, but it seems that this year they’re a bit different. The recent rumors/announcements have been more in depth and what Ivan Seidenberg, Verizon CEO, said about wanting Verizon to carry the new iPhone “4G” makes them seem much, much more convincing.

The picture to the right is a newly released photo of what is being called the new “Verizon iPhone”. As you can see, the back (probably) immediately reminds you of the iPad’s aluminum back. Also, the iPhone in the image also looks to be of a slightly different size than the current iPhone (some rumors have said that the new iPhone 4G will have a larger screen). The only thing that looks a bit “sketchy” as of now, is the quality of the image. The fuzziness could easily be hiding some “evidence” of fantastic PhotoShop-ing skills. It’s up to you, the reader, to decide whether or not this image is viable.

The only reason why Apple wouldn’t make a Verizon iPhone, would probably be that either their exclusivity contract with AT&T still hasn’t expired or that AT&T will pay them off. Verizon Wireless is currently the largest wireless provider in the United States. If Apple doesn’t release the new iPhone on Verizon, it will be an incredibly ignorant notion.

Apple’s New iPhone OS 4

Here is a direct article straight from Apple‘s website with the seven main new features (out of 100) available with the iPhone OS 4. An article based upon my opinion on what was released today should be out within the next couple of days. Also, after you finish reading what has been included in the new OS, please leave a comment telling us what you enjoyed, found interesting, or still wish to have been included in the new OS.

Instead of paraphrasing what Apple has to say, why not read why they have to say directly from them:

Includes Multitasking, Folders, iBooks, Unified Inbox & More

CUPERTINO, California—April 8, 2010—Apple® today previewed its iPhone® OS 4 software and released a beta version of the software to iPhone Developer Program members. The iPhone OS 4 beta release includes an updated Software Development Kit (SDK) with over 1,500 new Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and over 100 new features that will be available to iPhone and iPod touch® users this summer. New features include Multitasking for third party apps; Folders to better organize and access apps; improved Mail with a unified inbox, fast inbox switching and threaded messages; enhanced Enterprise support with even better data protection, mobile device management, wireless app distribution and more; Apple’s new iAd mobile advertising platform; and iBooks, the delightful new ebook reader and online bookstore recently debuted on the iPad™.

“iPhone OS 4 is the fourth major release of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’re delivering over 100 new features, including multitasking, folders, a unified inbox, deeper Enterprise support, and an iPhone version of our iBooks reader and online iBookstore.”

iPhone OS 4’s new multitasking offers users a new way to quickly move between apps, and provides developers seven new multitasking services to easily add multitasking features to their apps. These services include background audio, so apps like Pandora can play music in the background, and VoIP, so VoIP apps can receive a VoIP call even when the iPhone is asleep or the user is running other apps. iPhone OS 4 provides multitasking to third party apps while preserving battery life and foreground app performance, which has until now proved elusive on mobile devices.

Folders help users better organize and quickly access their apps. Simply drag one app icon onto another, and a new folder is automatically created. The folder is automatically given a name based on the App Store category of that app, such as “Games,” which the user can easily rename. Using folders, users can now organize and access over 2,000 apps on their iPhone. Users can also create and manage iPhone folders on their Mac® or PC using iTunes® 9.2.

iPhone OS 4 delivers the best mail experience on a mobile phone with its new Unified Inbox, allowing users to see messages from all their email accounts displayed together in a single inbox. With just a few taps, users can quickly switch between inboxes to see messages from any single account. In addition, users can now thread their messages by conversation, making it easier to stay on top of email discussions, as well as open email attachments with compatible apps from the App Store.

iAd, Apple’s new mobile advertising platform, combines the emotion of TV ads with the interactivity of web ads. Today, when users click on mobile ads they are almost always taken out of their app to a web browser, which loads the advertiser’s webpage. Users must then navigate back to their app, and it is often difficult or impossible to return to exactly where they left. iAd solves this problem by displaying full-screen video and interactive ad content without ever leaving the app, and letting users return to their app anytime they choose. iPhone OS 4 lets developers easily embed iAd opportunities within their apps, and the ads are dynamically and wirelessly delivered to the device. Apple will sell and serve the ads, and developers will receive an industry-standard 60 percent of iAd revenue.

The iPhone OS 4 beta release includes a developer preview of Game Center, which contains a set of APIs that allows developers to create apps with the ability to invite friends to play a game, start a multiplayer game through matchmaking and track achievements and compare high scores on a leader board. Apps created with GameKit APIs will work with Game Center, Apple’s new social gaming network available to iPhone and iPod touch users later this year.

New enterprise features in iPhone OS 4 include improvements in security, scalability and compatibility. The new Mobile Device Management service can be integrated with third party servers to wirelessly configure, query and even wipe or lock managed iPhones, and iPhone OS 4 enables enterprises to securely host and wirelessly distribute their own in-house developed apps to employees. The new Data Protection feature uses a user’s passcode as an encryption key to protect mail messages and attachments stored on the iPhone. iPhone OS 4 now provides the option to set a longer, more complex passcode, making iPhone and its data even more secure. iPhone OS 4 allows IT managers to set up multiple Exchange ActiveSync accounts, is compatible with Exchange Server 2010 and includes support for forthcoming SSL VPN applications from Juniper Networks and Cisco.

Today, more than four billion apps have been downloaded from the revolutionary App Store and more than 185,000 apps are available to consumers in 90 countries. Over 85 million iPhone and iPod touch users around the world can choose from an incredible range of apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel.

Availability
The iPhone OS 4 beta software and SDK are available immediately for iPhone Developer Program members at developer.apple.com. iPhone OS 4 will be available as a software update to iPhone and iPod touch users this summer.* A version of iPhone OS 4 will be coming to iPad this Fall.

*Some features may not be available on all products. For example, Multitasking requires iPhone 3GS or third generation iPod touch (late 2009 models with 32GB or 64GB).

Jailbreak 3.1.3 with PwnageTool 3.1.5

Yesterday the Dev Team released the latest of PwnageTool which will allow  all iDevices with the older bootrom (i.e. not iPod touch 3G, iPod Touch 2G (MC Model), or newer iPhone 3GS owners) to create a custom jailbroken OS 3.1.3 firmware file.  This firmware file will contain the older base-band so if you have unlocked with blacksn0w you should NOT use it.  This tool is for Macs only – there is no Windows version.

If you are on a Windows machine, however, you can use the current version of Redsn0w. When it asks to browse for the firmware, browse for the
3.1.2 firmware… it works the same.

Please be sure to read the whole post by the Dev Team HERE before you go ahead and jailbreak your iDevice.

MOD Shell by CaseCrown

CaseCrown‘s MOD Shell could quite possibly be the best case for the iPod Touch 2G/3G [at an affordable cost - $19.99 ($12.21 as of December 28, 2009)]. The MOD Shell is available in Red/Black and White/Black. It’s design blows other comparative cases out of the water along with it’s affordable price.

The case is made from a premium grade synthetic leather which appeals to a vast majority of animal lovers. The faux leather not only looks like real leather, but it also smells like real leather which many companies cannot seem to be able to do. On the back of the case is a single, thick fiber woven stripe which seems to give the case a sporty design. The only suggestion I could give to make this case the best it can be, would be to make the thread outlining the stripe red on the red/black version. On the white/black version of the case, the thread outlining the white fiber woven stripe is white which accents the stripe beautifully.

The upper part of the left side of the case is left open to expose the volume rockers, the bottom is open to expose the 30-pin dock connector as well as the headphone jack, and the top is, of course, left open so that you can slide your device in and out. What I really enjoy, though, about the case is that the top does not go too high as to make it difficult to press the sleep/power button, contrary to DSstyle’s Twill Series. Finally, the small logo on the front does not take away from the chic design of the case. Many cases have the company’s name/logo printed too large. CaseCrown’s logo on the MOD Shell is just the right size.

The MOD Shell by CaseCrown is by far one of the best cases around and at an affordable price. You can view the MOD Shell for the iPod Touch HERE or the iPhone version HERE.

Unreal Engine 3 Ported to iPhone 3GS/iPod Touch 3G

AnandTech has reported that Epic Games, the creators of games such as the Gears of War series, BioShock, numerous Tom Clancy games, and so on, have been able to port their Unreal Engine 3 (the “engine” that runs the games) to the iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G.

Quote (via AnandTech):

The demo is both playable and has a flythrough. It’s using a modified Unreal Tournament level previously shown off at GDC. A virtual thumbstick on the left side of the screen controls your movement, while tracking your thumb in the lower right corner of the screen controls the camera. Just tap the screen to shoot. Mark said this is a tech test bed and they’re experimenting with several different control schemes including ones with tilt…

..It requires OpenGL ES 2.0, so the iPhone 2G and 3G won’t work, nor will the older iPod Touch models. It doesn’t really matter though, this is just a starting point…

Here’s a short demo video:

Xtand by Just Mobile

The Xtand by Just Mobile is a fantastic iPhone/iPod Touch stand. The Xtand has the look and feel of the iMac’s stand and so it compliments all aluminum-bodied Macs terrifically. The one stand-alone factor that makes the Xtand so great, is the fact that it’s constructed for actual aluminum. It is capable of holding the iPhone 3G/3GS as well as the iPod Touch 1G/2G, provides cable management, and allows you to swivel the device a full 360 degrees.

A great design aspect that went into the stand, is that the device will never touch the aluminum part of the stand, only the four rubber grips that hold on to it. Also, there are two rubber feet on the bottom so that it doesn’t move with a gentle nudge. Here are the five main features of the Xtand:

  • All solid aluminium construction
  • 360 degrees rotation
  • Adjustable viewing angle
  • Cable management
  • Non-slip feet

What I like most about the Xtand is the fact that it goes so well with my MacBook Pro and so it provides for a very elegant setup. The cable management comes into play when you choose to charge or sync your device. You simple fish your charging cable through the hole on the back of the stand and move the extra cable out of sight. I use the Xtand on a daily basis now and it really does not bother me to have to remove my iPod Touch from it’s case so that I can go ahead and place it in the Xtand.

The Xtand retails for a fairly steep price of $39.90 USD, however, as of the date this article was written (December 23, 2009), Amazon is having a 27% off sale on the Xtand. To find out where else you can purchase this and other Just Mobile products, please click HERE.

Giveaway: In order to be entered in the giveaway for the Xtand for the iPod Touch 1G/2G, you must be following us on Twitter, click HERE to go to our Twitter Page. Once that’s done, simply tweet this message: @iPT2gGeec Xtand Giveaway. Once you do that you’re automatically entered! The giveaway will end on December 30, 2009.

DSstyle’s Twill Series

Twill_header_002DSstye’s Twill series case for the iPhone 3G and 3GS as well as the iPod Touch 2G and 3G is and amazing case. It is available in both black and white leather. This case has a unique feature to it, though. The leather is interwoven giving it a carbon fiber look and feel. Not only does this provide for aesthetics, but it also strengthens the case making your device that much more protected.

With all of the great features of the Twill series, there is also one fault that I have found and that is that with the iPod Touch version, the case goes above the top of the device (as seen in the video review below). Although this is not a significant problem, it can pose a problem when one would want to press the power/sleep button. Other than that one fault, the rest of the case is virtually flawless.

In order to use the Twill with your device, you simply slide your device into the case from the top. The inside of the case is lined with a felt-like fabric making sure not to scratch your device, and surprisingly enough, despite how easy it is to insert the device, it will not fall out of the case on it’s own. There is also a cutout on the front of the case for the home button, a cutout on the bottom the case exposing the headphone jack and 30-pin dock connector, as well as a final cutout on the left hand side exposing the volume rockers.

Overall, for a case that only costs $28.09 $31.42, I highly reccomend for you to go ahead and take a quick look at it over on DSstyle’s website. Even if the Twill series doesn’t appeal to you, check out some of their other cases, I’m sure you’ll find one that you like.

DSstyles Metallico Series

I am thrilled to announce that DSstyle’s and I have made a business arrangement where they will be sending me products throughout the rest of 2009 for me to review. So far I have received four products from them, the Twill series case, two carrying pouches (most likely a giveaway), and the Metallico series case which this review is for.Metalllico_black_001

The Metallico series is an incredibly simple case made from 100% plastic and has a retail price of $20.69. Granted, it is a bit pricey for a piece of plastic, however, the design is superb. The case is designed for the iPod Touch 2G/3G and the iPhone 3G/3GS. The back of the case mimicks the back of the iDevice completely, including the Apple logo, device name, allotted GB, a generic serial number, as well as the other symbols that can be found. Unfortunately, the case only comes has the option of displaying “16GB” so if you happen to have a different size device, you’re out of luck.

The case is extraordinarily simple. It is a snap on case so it is very easy to get on and off and it only covers the back of the device (that means that the chrome bezel is exposed). This has upsides as well as downsides. For one, it adds virtually no weight and/or bulk and it keeps the slim design of the device. On the other hand, it offers absolutely no protection to the chrome bezel or the front face of the device. Again, this adds the looks and feel of a slim case, but it lacks in protection. I have to admit that I have dropped my iPod several times while using the case and it has fallen on the front face once. I was lucky enough to have no damage done to the device, but it is very plausible for damage to be done if the device falls face down. Also, on the inside of the case, there is nothing separating the back of the device from the inside of the case. As previously mentioned, the case is 100% plastic and although it is very smooth, it still has to potential to scratch the back of the device.

Overall I’d say that if you want a smooth, sleek, and comfortable case, but not concerned with price to protection ratio, go for it. It’s a fantastic case and I personally use it day in and day out (for about the past four weeks). The only thing that would make this case that much more appealing, would be if the price was lowered to about $10-$15.

While the mobile gambling industry keeps growing, it doesn’t seem to have an effect on the Rushmore group who released plenty of new slots this month and even had 2 progressive jackpot winners this month.

PwnageTool 3.1.3 Released for iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 2G

Quote (via Dev-Team Blog):

Here are some details on our latest version of PwnageTool for Mac OS X that adds support for the 3.1 release of the iPhone software for iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 2G.

SUMMARY:

The iPhone 3GS is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the phone was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 – PwnageTool does not support the 3GS out of the box. If your iPhone 3GS has 3.1 preinstalled and is not Pwned then there is no tested jailbreak solution at the moment.

The iPod 2G is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the iPod 2G was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 – PwnageTool does not support the iPod 2G with 3.1 software out of the box.

DETAILS:

  1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G(S) with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service then you should only update your device with an .ipsw that is made with the new PwnageTool. There are no second chances with this. You need to remember that PwnageTool will provide an upgrade path to newer versions of the iPhone software in the future.
  2. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
  3. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
  4. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1 capable version of PwnageTool.
  5. PwnageTool will work for the iPhone 3GS assuming you have already Pwned it at 3.0 or 3.0.1
  6. PwnageTool will work for the iPod touch 2G assuming you have already Pwned it at 3.0 or 3.0.1
  7. PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G(S) and the iPod touch (1st Generation and 2nd Generation) but NOT the iPod touch 3rd generation.
  8. For 3G and 3G(S) users who are Pwned, PwnageTool is your key to updating in the future, just remember to never install an update directly from Apple, always use an .ipsw that has been created with PwnageTool.
  9. There is no Windows version of PwnageTool it is a Mac OS X tool only, we are not developing a Windows version of PwnageTool.

What’s a Baseband?

The ‘baseband’ is the generic nickname given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network.

Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features).

The 3.1 update for the iPhone 3G and 3GS contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband.

WHICH DEVICE DO I HAVE?

Read the description to identify your device, once you have correctly identified your device follow the specific instructions for that device as listed below.

SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G(S)

This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G(S) for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G(S) doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, if your device was Pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 then you can use PwnageTool to create an ipsw and then use this to update and jailbreak your phone.
