Pulse Goes Free

I wouldn’t really say friend but Cristina Cordova, Vice President of Business Development at Alphonso Labs emailed me stating that Pulse Mini and Pulse News Reader would be going free on all devices across all platforms. She attached a PDF that explained why.

All the PDF said was that the college project is so successful that they have made enough money on it and decided to make it free forever.

Good think to because I was just about to buy it!

Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Reasons to Consider Taking a Break From Apple

Earlier today TheAppleBlog had an interesting post that I thought many Apple “fan-boys” should read.

Quote (via TheAppleBlog):

I realize that suggesting a break from Apple products on an Apple blog is heresy, but there are good reasons to pop your head up and look around at what else is out there every once in a while. Gadget tunnel vision is a dangerous thing, for both your sense of perspective and your budget.

Brand Loyalty Carries No Tangible Reward

Brand loyalty can be a very strong emotion, especially around Apple Inc. But what’s it really worth to you? You could argue that by being loyal, you’re encouraging Apple to continue putting out high-quality products, but it’s not a one-to-one relationship. Buying a piece of kit from Sony or someone else here or there won’t destroy Apple’s R&D capabilities.

In reality, you get nothing for your loyalty beyond the ability to wave it in the faces of others who aren’t so loyal. Which, admittedly, can be quite satisfying in the short term, but doesn’t really amount to much in the long run.

Playing the Field Gets You More Action

Pardon the double-entendre, but it’s true that if you have greater variety in your choice of gadgets and tech, you’ll have a much broader base of experience from which to draw for both professional and personal purposes. At work and on resumés, platform agnosticism plays much better than single-minded devotion to one company. Most employees don’t want to see “haven’t touched a Windows machine since ’95″ listed under “Skills.”

Knowing about, say, Android as well as iOS, for example, will also get you far in personal interactions. The one-note Apple guy or girl isn’t always the most popular person at tweetups and tech conferences. Even if you’re debating the merits of OS X versus Windows 7, think how much stronger your argument will be if you’ve actually used both extensively.

Your Apple Vacation Can Be a “Staycation”

You don’t need to invest in new hardware to take a break from Apple. Bootcamp on OS X allows you to run Windows or other operating systems on your Mac computer. Or, if you’d rather not even leave OS X (though I recommend you do), there are always Parallels and VMware Fusion which allow you to run Windows on an emulated machine within Apple’s OS.

You can also even run Android on an iPhone or iPad using OpeniBoot, though it’s pretty buggy. But if you’re the adventurous type, and want to test out Google’s iOS competitor without spending money on new hardware, this could be the way to do it.

The Future Is Multi-Platform

Developers aren’t going to focus on just one platform, so long as user interest in a platform continues to grow. Nor are content providers, advertisers, or enterprise IT departments. There’s no reason why users should, either. Device and platform flexibility will inform UI and UX decisions going forward, and consumers with a wide variety of experience will help inform those decisions.

Apple is a great platform, and will likely remain my platform of choice for the foreseeable future. But that doesn’t mean I’ll use it to the absolute exclusion of all others. Variety is the spice of life, and that maxim applies just as well to my digital existence, too.

Verizon iPhone Proof?

Above is an image of the almost non-fiction “Verizon iPhone” posted by ÜberGizmo. You can see it’s a white iPhone 4 with no SIM card slot on the right side, no area for the antenna, and it’s displaying the Verizon Carrier setting. This would be, by no means, difficult to Photoshop. Third party companies already sell white iPhone 4 parts, the phone could be jailbroken making the carrier display “Verizon”, and Photoshop could be used to remove the SIM card slot and antenna.

We’ll see what’s to come in the months ahead. Leave your comments below of what you think about the Verizon iPhone. Is it a myth, will it come early next year, or will it never come at all? Fill us in on what you’re thinking.

Be sure to follow @TechGeec on Twitter to receive live, up-to-date updates on the Verizon iPhone.

Apple to Release iOS 4.2 November 24th

Sources close to Apple report that iOS 4.2 for iPhone and iPad has been delayed until November 24th.

A source that works closely with Apple said that the company had shelved its original plan to release the software update today, and had instead pushed back the launch until later this month.
Although this isn’t technically a delay (Apple officially announced that iOS 4.2 will be released sometime in November), it was thought that Apple might have been planning to release iOS 4.2 today.

iTunes 10.1 got released earlier today, they usually do this at least a few days in advance of any update.

Let me know what you think!

Apple Releases iOS 4.2 GM Build 2

If you like me your ready to shoot ole Stevey ( http://twitter.com/connerowen/status/3300086985523200) for delaying iOS 4.2 It’s not every day your tablet gets upgraded to multitasking. Well Apple just planted (seeded) iOS 4.2 to developers (build 8C134b, instead of 8C134), which fixes with the Wi-Fi issue that halted the launch. If the build is free of any more bugs, iOS 4.2 should be on your shiney iPad soon. Just not this week probably.

Interview With Epic Games

Guys I recently emailed the developers of the demo app Epic Citadel that is currently in the iPhone and iPad App Store that demos Epic Games Unreal Engine on the iPhone or iPad. This is the app was also demoed on the September 1st Keynote at Apple HQ.

But anyways I emailed them to ask them when they think when the app would go live in the App Store.

Here is the entire conversation:

Apple Releases iOS 4.2 GM (New Features)

Quote (via iEnlive):

Today, Apple finally released the Gold Master (ship to end users) version of iOS 4.2 to developers and have begun soliciting apps built for it, forshadowing a close date of releasing the final update early this month. Apple already has shown us iOS 4.2 for both iPhone and iPad back at their September event, which also had other announcements on 4.1.

Apple posted a message Monday inquirinig that developers should prepare their applications for iOS 4.2, and this sparks interest because of Apple notifiying to get ready for 4,2, as of submitting updates for iOS 4.1 (iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad).

With the liberation of iOS 4.2, the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch will be receiving some great updates which Apple users of all kinds will enjoy. We have no word as to what changes or new features have been implemented into iOS 4.2 – hit us up if you find out after your quick experience.

Also of high importance, iOS 4.2 will also require iTunes 10.1 installed – the beta has been available for quite a bit now (for those wondering), and can be downloaded via the Developer Center on Apple’s side.

UPDATE: New features have been revealed and found in the new version of iOS (4.2)

-new AirPlay icon
-Multitasking bar [now with advanced brightness and volume controls]
-new Mobile Me login interface [allows you to log into MobileMe account settings using an Apple ID + offering a link to create a new/free Apple ID within the window]

Verizon iPhone Shipping in December

Pegatron Technology has been identified as manufacturer of the new model CDMA iPhone, and a report in Digitimes tells us that company expects to ship 10 million of these things next year.

More than this, Pegatron is ramping up its manufacturing base for these things, installing new machinery and hiring a several legions of new employees (10,000, in fact) to make the Apple mobiles.

Pegatron boss Jason Chang wouldn’t say anything about Apple, but was seen to say that the staff increase was mainly “to handle growing smartphone business”, and to predict strong revenues in 2011.

Pegatron is also reportedly attempting to secure manufacturing orders for MacBooks and iPads.

The big news? Pegatron will start shipping the CDMA iPhone 4 in December…

PlayStation Phone Leaked

Quote (via Multi-touch Fans):

The touchpad-looking device in the center is in fact just that: a multitouch trackpad, which will be taking the place of analog nubs previously found on the PSP. On the sides, you have the standard PlayStation controls (up, down, left, right arrows on the left of the device, and the standard X, Circle, Triangle, and Square on the right side), which will undoubtedly be used to control PlayStation games.

The shoulder buttons are present, though not visible at this angle. Instead of going the traditional Sony-way and offering a device that utilizes their in-house Memory Stick, this prototype will use the much more standardized microSD format. I’d also like to point out that, even though Sony Ericsson phones’ have been historically lacking in the software department, they do generally have outstanding build quality and materials, and the camera is usually of very high quality– the high-end devices are usually made with Carl Zeiss lens, the same brand of lens that the Nokia N8 has.  The prototype which was leaked has no skin, though that could obviously change before launch (guesstimated to be either Holidays 2010, or early 2011).

The software is reportedly very buggy in its current build, so that’s a sign that there will definitely be changes to come. Why does this matter? Because this is the first phone to be positioned (not just from a marketing perspective — the iPhone has already been there) as a gaming device that just happens to do everything a modern smartphone does. Make a call, shoot a text, slaughter some Chimera on Resistance: Retribution (the game has not been confirmed to be available; this is merely an example).

Instead of taking the Apple approach of selling a phone with very minimalistic controls and waiting for enterprising developers to figure out how to make various genres of games work, Sony has designed a phone that just happens to slide out and reveal a full rack of dedicated gaming controls. But do people want a device that is so obviously a gaming machine that you can talk on? That seems to be the bet Sony (and, by extension, Google) is taking with this smartphone – PSP hybrid. It will be interesting to see which mindset prevails in the ever changing smartphone wars, now that we have three– Apple, Microsoft, and now Sony– big players making big bets with mobile gaming.
