ASUS Zenbook: Style and Substance

Ever since the release of Apple’s MacBook Air, ultrabooks are becoming more and more popular. However, many individuals are Windows users and prefer to use a thin laptop of great quality that utilizes that platform. These days, you have many great ultrabooks from which to choose, one of which is the Asus Zenbook UX31E-DH52. This device has many amazing features and specifications, making it the ultimate computer for any user who is always on the go. While ultrabooks are pricier than most standard laptops, you can purchase it cheaper with a Newegg coupon code when you shop. If you are considering buying the Asus Zenbook, you should explore all the details you can expect.

  • The design of the Asus Zenbook UX31E-DH52 is extremely similar to that of the MacBook Air by Apple. It is constructed from an aluminum unibody that rivals its Mac competitor. When closed, its silhouette appears in a teardrop shape and it sports a 13.3 inch screen that has a resolution of 1600 by 900 pixels. The ultrabook is primarily silvery gray with silver keys on its keyboard, making it not an exact clone of the MacBook Air like many Samsung models. It is very lightweight at just over three pounds, making it a breeze to tote around.
  • The Asus Zenbook UX31E-DH52 is equipped with Microsoft’s Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit operating system. It includes 4GB of memory and sports a 128GB or 256GB solid state drive, which is sufficient if you plan on using the machine for browsing the Internet, listening to music, watching videos, and for saving a minimal amount of files. The ultrabook sports a 1.7 GHz Intel Core i5 or i7 processor that is speedy and efficient. The speakers in the Zenbook are spectacular and superior to those of the MacBook Air and many other competing ultrabooks, so if your main goal with the device is listening to music or watching movies and videos, you will be completely happy with this feature.
  • Battery life of the Asus Zenbook UX31E-DH52 is not the best at around five hours. This is one feature of the ultrabook that may be negative to some, so if you need a machine that is going to perform for many hours outdoors or in an area where you may not have access to an outlet, you may want to reconsider this device. However, if you will be out for no more than five hours with your ultrabook, the Zenbook is perfect for you.
  • The regular retail price of the Zenbook UX31E-DH52 ranges from $1,099USD to $1,449USD, depending on the amount of hard drive space and processor you select. This makes it somewhat cheaper than a MacBook Air, though you can find it for under $1,000USD at certain stores if you do your research and comparison shop.
  • Other features you get with the Asus Zenbook are a multi-click touchpad, a USB 3.0 port, micro-HDMI connectivity, and an SD card slot.

When considering a new ultrabook, the most important question you should ask yourself is: What are the features I truly need, and how much money am I willing to spend? You can also decide whether you require the pricier version of the Zenbook if you feel it would be well worth the extra cost.

Apple’s New iPad

It’s hard to believe we could fit so many great ideas into something so thin.

A large, high-resolution LED-backlit, IPS display. An incredibly responsive Multi-Touch screen. And an amazingly powerful, Apple-designed chip. All in a design that’s thin and light enough to take anywhere. iPad isn’t just the best device of its kind. It’s a whole new kind of device. Watch the iPad video

LED-backlit, IPS Display

The high-resolution, 9.7 inch LED-backlit, IPS display on iPad is remarkably crisp and vivid. Which makes it perfect for web browsing, watching movies, or showing off photos. It’s also been designed to work in any orientation — portrait or landscape. And because it uses a display technology called IPS (in-plane switching), it has a wide, 178° viewing angle. So you can hold it almost any way you want, and still get a brilliant picture, with excellent color and contrast.

The Multi-Touch screen on the iPad uses the same revolutionary technology that’s in an iPhone. But for iPad, the technology has been completely reengineered for the larger surface, to make it extremely precise and responsive. So when you’re zooming in on a map, flicking through your photos, or deleting an email, iPad responds with incredible accuracy. And it does just what you want it to.

Thin and light

One of the first things you’ll notice about the iPad is how thin and light it is. The screen is 9.7 inches, measured diagonally. So overall, it’s slightly smaller than a magazine. And at just 1.5 lbs and 0.5 inches thin,1 it’s easy to carry and use anywhere. There’s also a slight curve to the back. Which makes it easy to pick up and comfortable to hold.

10 hours.

Up to 10 hours
battery life

To maximize battery life, Apple engineers took the same lithium polymer battery technology they developed for our notebook computers and applied it to the iPad. As a result, you can use iPad for up to 10 hours while surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching videos, or listening to music.2

With built-in 802.11n, iPad can take advantage of the fastest Wi-Fi networks. And it’ll automatically locate available Wi-Fi networks, which you can easily join with a few simple taps. iPad also comes with Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR, which lets you connect to devices like wireless headphones or the Apple Wireless Keyboard.

iPad will also be available in a 3G model, with super-fast data speeds up to 7.2 Mbps.3 So if you’re traveling, or you happen to be somewhere that doesn’t have a Wi-Fi network, you can still get a fast connection for surfing the web, downloading email, or getting directions.

Apple A4 chip. The A4 chip inside iPad was custom-designed by Apple engineers to be extremely powerful, and yet extremely power efficient. So the performance is unlike anything you’ve ever seen on a touch-based device. Which makes iPad fantastic for everything from productivity apps to games. But at the same time, the A4 chip is so power efficient that it helps iPad get up to 10 hours of battery life on a single charge. And iPad is available with a choice of 16, 32 or 64GB flash storage.4 Which gives you lots of room for your photos, movies, music, apps, and more.

The 30-pin dock connector on the bottom of the iPad allows you to dock and charge it. It also lets you connect to iPad accessories like the Camera Connection Kit or the Keyboard Dock.

The powerful, built-in speaker produces a full, rich sound. Which makes watching a movie or listening to music even more enjoyable. It also comes with a headphone jack and a built-in microphone.

30-pin connector. Built-in speaker.

There are lots of great accessories that have been specifically designed for iPad. The Keyboard Dock, for instance, is a dock with a full-size keyboard. There’s also a standalone Dock. And because iPad has built-in Bluetooth 2.1, it’ll work with an Apple Wireless Keyboard, too. There’s also a Camera Connection Kit that lets you import photos from a camera or SD card. There’s even an iPad Case that not only protects it, it also allows you to use iPad in various positions, to make it easy to type, look at photos, or watch movies. And through a range of accessories, iPad can output to TVs, projectors and displays. Learn more about iPad accessories in Tech Specs

Rivet MicroSleeve for MacBook Pro 15″/MacBook 13″

I am very pleased to give you TechGeec.com’s first MacBook Pro accessory review. Rivet was kind enough to send us out the MicroSleeve ($21.90) available for the MacBook Pro 15″ and MacBook 13″. To get the ball rolling, I’d first like to mention that this accessory is a sleeve (not a case) and so it’s not meant to protect the computer against major bumps, drops, and falls. What it will protect it against is dust, normal, everyday bumps, as well as gunk or fingerprints that may get on it while it’s being carried or moved.

The MicroSleeve is tailored from “exclusive” strong and soft micro fiber (similar to the cleaning cloths meant for computer screens, eye glasses, etc.). Because of this fabric, as you’re constantly sliding your MacBook in and out of the sleeve, it will be helping to remove some of the fingerprints or smudges that might be on the exterior casing of the Mac. Due to the softness of the micro fiber, it will also leave your computer scratch-free when sliding it in and out frequently.

The fabric is also incredibly thin leaving it available to fit in any backpack, briefcase, or bag that the MacBook would normally fit in by itself. Also, the MiroSleeve has a pretty tight fit on the MacBook so the shape of the computer will also show through the sleeve making it look even better than having a few loose corners like you might have on other sleeves.

The only flaw that I have found with the MicroSleeve is that on one of the sides, the fabric is cut about ¼ of a centimeter short so some of the Mac is exposed. Of course, this flaw is probably just on the particular sleeve that we happened to receive. For the most part, this is a magnificent sleeve for the MacBook and MacBook Pro and the gray color that it comes in will do a great job at suiting any lifestyle. You can find more information on Rivet’s MicroSleeve at RivetNow.com and stay tuned for our upcoming review on Rivet’s Vertical Sleeve.

A Note From the Editors of TechGeec: Though all products and services reviewed by TechGeec are “final,” many companies now make changes to their offerings after publication of our reviews, which may or may not be reflected above.

New Jersey Apple Store Robbed

Quote (via ABC.com)

MARLTON, N.J. – September 2, 2009 (WPVI) — Police are searching for the five bandits who hit the Apple Store in Marlton, New Jersey.

It happened shortly after 2:00 a.m. at the Promenade Shopping Center on Route 73.

The thieves broke into the store through the plate glass window, and then scooped up merchandise like a holiday shopping spree.

Security video showed the fast-paced robbery.

It’s after closing and the security guard is seen making his rounds in the store.

But, at 2:05 a.m., thieves hit the store’s plate glass door with a blunt object. Like professionals, they bring it shattering down with one strike.

Then, with precision timing, the five men enter the store and clean house like there’s no tomorrow. Each one moved in a different direction, lifting Macbook Pros which can run upwards of $3,000.

In all, they took 23 Macbook Pros, 14 iPhones, and nine iPod Touches.

It all happened in 31 seconds flat.

Later, the security guard is seen running in, after the thieves had practically picked the place clean leaving only the price tags behind.

The thieves seemed savvy enough to know how to play the guard, making a gesture like they were in possession of a handgun.

The cameras showed that two of the suspects were wearing black sweatshirts and a third was wearing a red vest with a light colored long sleeve shirt underneath.
