New Apple Media Event on Sept. 1, 2010

Today, August 25, 2010, Apple announced that they will be holding a music-based media event on September 1, 2010, much like they do every year. Here are some of the products we expect them to announce:

  • New touch-screen iPod shuffle
  • New iPod touch with front-facing (and possibly back-facing) camera to allow for use with Face Time over WiFi (to be used with email addresses as opposed to phone numbers), Retina Display, 1Gz processor (with maybe 512MB RAM), and better battery life.
  • iOS4 for iPad
  • iTV (revamped Apple TV) with it’s own App Store and might be the size of the iPhone 4 – Price: $99 USD

Sorry, no Verizon iPhone will be announced in September. If there will be one, it will be announced in January (most likely). Again, these are all just rumors so nothing is certain for sure, but these products will be very likely to be announced.

[UPDATE] Apple to Acquire Lala

Within the past week or so, rumors have been spreading about Apple purchasing Lala, a website where you can instantly stream music for free as well as purchase.

No ads, no subscriptions — just an incredible catalog of music to explore. Listen to any song or album once for free. Music from major labels and indie labels, all legally licensed. New albums on the day of release, and hidden gems from an artist’s early works.

This could possibly lead Apple into a new direction with iTunes. They could now possibly sell music at a cheaper price as well as allow you to listen to full songs instead of giving you a short thirty second preview. If you would like to read more about this topic, feel free to go to The New York Times website to read the full article. Also, if you would like to learn more about Lala, go ahead and visit them at lala.com

UPDATE: Apple has suposedly purchased Lala for $80 million which isn’t bad considering Lala wasn’t all that big of a company.

UPDATE: Reports are now spreading from TechCrunch that Apple purchased Lala for a mere $17 million. Assuming Lala’s reported cash reserve of $14 million is correct, the company would have only gained $3 million.

iTunes 9.0

2zs78uwAccording to Boy Genius Report, iTunes 9.0 will have the following features:

  1. Blu-ray support
  2. Application Management – You will be able to visually manage your apps and rearrange them
  3. Social Networking - Integration with Twitter, Facebook, and Last.fm

These are some great features but as of now, they are still just rumors. I do find, however, that the social networking feature is not needed all that much considering iTunes is still just a media player, much like WMP (Windows Media Player) or VLC media player. I do think that the integration of Blu-ray support is a very nice add-on. Because the are still not officially confirmed, we still do not know if this is true. Though if it is, I am curious if it would work on all computers or only on computers that have Blu-ray disc readers. The reason I point this out is because I doubt that if a certain computer does not have the hardware to read Blu-ray discs, what would make software on this computer capable of doing so?

There is no confirmed release date but it is believed to be released sometime near September when the new iPod Touch third generation will be announced (possibly).
