How to Theme iOS 6 Cellular/WiFi Signal & Data Icons

Very few (current) themes modify the cellular and WiFi signal icons as well as themes that only modify these icons and I believe that this is because the names for these image files in the iOS file system have changed. Below you will find the names that your icons must have in order to be properly applied by WinterBoard on a device with a retina display. If your device does not have a retina display, simply remove ‘@2x’ from the images’ names.

Cellular Signal Icons

0 bars: WhiteOnBlackEtch_0_Bars@2x.png
1 bar: WhiteOnBlackEtch_1_Bars@2x.png
2 bars: WhiteOnBlackEtch_2_Bars@2x.png
3 bars: WhiteOnBlackEtch_3_Bars@2x.png
4 bars: WhiteOnBlackEtch_4_Bars@2x.png
5 bars: WhiteOnBlackEtch_5_Bars@2x.png

WiFi Signal Icons

0 bars: WhiteOnBlackEtch_0_WifiBars@2x.png
1 bar: WhiteOnBlackEtch_1_WifiBars@2x.png
2 bars: WhiteOnBlackEtch_2_WifiBars@2x.png
3 bars: WhiteOnBlackEtch_3_WifiBars@2x.png

Cellular Data Icons

EDGE: WhiteOnBlackEtch_DataTypeEDGE@2x.png
3G: WhiteOnBlackEtch_DataTypeUMTS@2x.png
4G/LTE: WhiteOnBlackEtch_DataTypeLTE@2x.png

Notification Center Icons

For Notification Center, all image names must start with ‘WhiteOnBlackShadow’ instead of ’WhiteOnBlackEtch’.

Additionally, these images must be placed in the ‘UIImages’ folder inside of the theme’s folder.

‘Theme Name’ → UIImages

You can download a signal icon pack which I modified to work with my Verizon iPhone 5 on iOS 6 so you can see how each icon is named. These icons were made by MacThemes’ user Karoshi.

Quick Tip

With the help of WinterBoard, it’s actually extremely easy to figure out the file names of every image in iOS. In WinterBoard’s ‘Advanced’ settings, turn ‘Record UIImages’ to ON. Every image that is not themed will be saved as PNGs into /tmp/UIImages. For example, if you want to theme Phone.app’s dialer, open the Phone app to the dialer tab and those images will then be saved into the /tmp/UIImages folder. Simply SSH (or use iFile) into that folder and those images will be saved there so that you can find the images which you want to theme and use the same names for theming.

Cable Internet vs. Mobile Broadband

Three decades ago the only essential things identified by researchers for mankind to survive were water, food, clothing, medicine, and shelter; not until humanity was introduced to the so-called “Internet”. After long years of research and extensive experimentation, mankind had perfected the science of telecommunications and connectivity, making the world smaller and smaller until it could be manipulated with just our fingers.

The invention of the Internet is considered one the most significant events throughout history. And as experienced, this phenomenon just came out from the open without any said launching or debut. All of a sudden humanity was caught needing the essentials of the Internet.

With the prevalence of the Internet, business sectors are now in their rat race to achieve supremacy in this industry. Companies were established and developed in order to provide the masses with this new online communication.

The pioneering companies were divided into two sectors; the cable Internet and the mobile broadband Internet. These types of Internet connections both offer excellent services which will be suited to the needs and preference of the users. Some companies even have both services because they realize that these services are needed not only by internet savvy individuals but also by the ordinary people who would like to be connected 24/7.

Let us look where these connections do best in terms of:

Price

A cabled Internet connection is much cheaper compared to mobile broadband. The price differs according to preferred internet speed. The slower the Internet speed, the cheaper the cost is. Mobile broadband on the other hand seems a little expensive because it requires more technology to transmit Internet signal while the users are mobile. The verdict on which internet connection wins in this category will be prized on the mobile broadband. It is because the usability of the cable internet connection is poor compared to the capability of the broadband to be mobile. The simplest explanation of this will be noticed by the cable Internet users who pay extra charges to connect to the Wifi zones.

Mobility

There is no argument with this category that mobile broadband wins. Unlike cable internet where connectivity will only be limited to a maximum of 100 meters provided by a WiFi router, mobile broadband can be utilized in any place provided that the network is available.

Security

In this case, cable Internet wins this category. As a stationary connection, a secured system is expected because users can be easily identified. Unlike with the mobile broadband where signals are transmitted through towers, cable internet users have full control over the security of the internet connection by screening identified users to their network. The only risk of having cable Internet is when users travel and need to connect to WiFi. Security will be vulnerable in this case because a public internet service is prone to viruses, spyware, and other forms of malware. Mobile broadband on the other hand can be safe anywhere at any given time.

In conclusion, mobile broadband wins the overall battle in terms of price, mobility, and security.

Apple Releases iOS 4.2 GM Build 2

If you like me your ready to shoot ole Stevey ( http://twitter.com/connerowen/status/3300086985523200) for delaying iOS 4.2 It’s not every day your tablet gets upgraded to multitasking. Well Apple just planted (seeded) iOS 4.2 to developers (build 8C134b, instead of 8C134), which fixes with the Wi-Fi issue that halted the launch. If the build is free of any more bugs, iOS 4.2 should be on your shiney iPad soon. Just not this week probably.

Apple Removes AirPrint from iPod Touch 2G

Apple has revised its original AirPrint announcement, they removed it’s huge promise, support for the second-generation iPod touch. It was announced way back in September. Apple originally said that printing would be supported on devices that support iOS multitasking, but they listed the second-generation iPod touch as compatible. The second-generation iPod touch has since been removed from the compatible device list, however, there’s no doubt that once iOS 4.2 is jailbroken, there will be a tweak available for download from Cydia to allow the iPod touch 2G to print wirelessly.

Apple Making AirPlay Open to Developers?

Airplay is most likely the most exciting iOS feature since multitasking. It has huge potential, and we’re still waiting to see what Apple will do with it, they already leaked a couple of details this week that will lead you to think good about it.

Apple told Fox News during a review of Apple TV that, they will open the feature to developers. They will definitely let apps stream audio and video over the air, which is awesome. Will Apple take it even further and allow apps to stream to an external monitor of sorts? We don’t know right now, but it sure is interesting.

Big apps like Hulu or Netflix restricting the use of the feature can’t be underestimated. This is uncharted territory when it comes to licensing deals, so it might not even be up to the developers.

So what do you think Apple will do? Let us know in the comments below.

CaseCrown Mod Stripe iPad Case (Review)

The Mod Stripe iPad Case by CaseCrown is a fantastic low-profile case. It’s faux leather and contrasting nylon stripe add great aesthetic features and all of your ports and buttons are fully accessible, including the SIM card slot (iPad 3G). It’s extremely thin but will still do a great job at protecting the back of the iPad.

The Mod Stripe iPad case by CaseCrown is my favorite low-profile case by far. To start off, they one and only downfall that this case has, is that it will only protect the back of the iPad and a little bit of the sides, but absolutely none of the front. With that said, the Mod Stripe adds only 0.2 cm of thickness to the device and barely any weight. It also allows complete access to all of the buttons (from any angle) and ports as well as the SIM card slot on the 3G iPads (which many cases don’t offer).

The case comes in four different color combinations – Brown/Yellow, Black/White, Black/Silver, and Black/Red. All of the cases are made of faux (false) leather, which seems very durable, along with a nylon stripe that runs down the center of the case which adds a fantastic contrast. To install the case, you simply snap the iPad in and surprisingly, it actually stay on very well, much better than expected.

One feature that I love about the case, is that it allows you to use headphones with it that have larger than normal jacks (the size most headphones – not earbuds – have). This is a very important feature to me because I use my headphones very often and most of the time if I have a case on my iPad, I can use my headphones because the hole for the headphone jack isn’t large enough. This case doesn’t, unfortunately, work with Apple’s iPad dock.

Selling for $36.99, this is a great buy and well worth the money.

Jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod touch 1G, iPod touch 2G, iPod touch 3G, and iPad on iOS 4, iOS 4.0.1, and iPad iOS 3.21

JailbreakMe 2.0 has now officially been released. This the new jailbreak for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod touch 1G, iPod touch 2G, iPod touch 3G, and iPad on iOS 4, iOS 4.0.1, and iPad iOS 3.21 released by trusted member of the iPhone dev-team, Comex.

If you are planning to jailbreak, make sure you sync with iTunes first and create a backup just in case something happens to go wrong. Turn on your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, or iPad and open Safari. Then go to JailbreakMe.com. Slide “Slide to Jailbreak” bar to start the jailbreak process, and you will be given further instructions depending on what firmware your device is on.

This is currently the newest and easiest jailbreak for the iPhone and iPad. Also, many of you will be happy to know that jailbreaking is now 100% legal, but don’t forget that you will lose your warranty. Follow @TechGeec on Twitter for future updates.

How to Wirelessly Sync iPhone and iPod Touch

In this tutorial, you will be shown how to wirelessly sync your iPhone or iPod Touch to your Mac (Windows not supported yet) using WiFi. This does not work for the iPad. Scroll down for the video tutorial.

STEP 1: Open Cydia, and search for “Wi-Fi Sync”. It’s in the BigBoss repo so you won’t need to add any sources. This application costs $9.99. If you’d like to get it for free, add the source “http://TheiPhoneSpotRepo.net/apt/”.

STEP 2: On your Mac, go to GetWiFiSync.com and download the appropriate version.

STEP 3: On your iDevice, open Wi-Fi Sync. A popup should appear on the Mac. Allow it to connect to the device. Now a popup should appear on the device. Allow that to connect as well.

STEP 4: With the application still open (it must be open in order to wirelessly sync), wait for the device to appear on the left-hand side of iTunes. Once it’s connected, sync like you normally would.

This processes uses WiFi (as I’m sure you could have guessed by the name of the app) so you must be connected to a WiFi hotspot. Also, because the device and the computer are not connected by hardware (sync cable), this process will take longer, however, it’s still good to have if you happen to lose the cable or just don’t have it with you.

How to Jailbreak the iPad (WiFi + WiFi/3G)

You can now jailbreak your iPad using comex’s Spirit tool. This guide will show you how. This is for OS X but the Windows version works exactly the same. It is a universal release, so both PPC and Intel folks (using Macs) are supported.

Jailbreak the iPad

First off, download Spirit. OS X users can download it from SpiritJB.com, ModMyi.com, or the MediaFire.com miror.
Windows users can get it here, from SpritJB.com, as well.

You’ll see the Spirit icon on your desktop.

Make sure your iPad is on, in normal mode, and connected to the computer via your USB cable. Open Spirit – it will see your device and show it’s ready (Spirit works on any iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch on firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, or 3.2).

Jailbreak iPad

Press Jailbreak. For about 30 seconds you’ll see Spirit tell you it’s jailbreaking.

Your iPad (or other device) will show a “Restore Complete” screen (don’t worry, it’s not deleting any of your info/content), and Spirit will show Jailbreak Complete!

Jailbreak iPad

The iPad will restart, and for a minute or two you will see a very nice piece of artwork while Spirit is extracting the bootstrap package and finishing its work.

Boom – that’s it. Your iPad will then start back up, and you’ll see Cydia installed.

I strongly suggest if you have not already backed up your SHSH blobs, you open Cydia and press the Make my life easier, thanks! button to have saurik’s server back them up for you. This ensures you can always restore to the 3.2 firmware, regardless of whether Apple attempts to restrict that later.

Congratulations! You’re now the proud owner of a jailbroken iPad.
