startdial

StartDial – Open the iPhone’s Phone App to a Specific Page Every Time

StartDial, developed by FilippoBiga and available for free from the BigBoss repository in Cydia, allows you to start your Phone app on the page of your choice (Favorites, Recents, Contacts, Keypad, or Voicemail). If, for instance, you typically use the keypad, you can set your start page as Keypad and every time you open the Phone app the Keypad page will open. If you prefer to select phone numbers from your contact list, you can set the start page to Contacts. In addition, you have the option to disable the voicemail page; a reasonable option for those security concerned users.

Steps (once your iPhone is jailbroken):
1. Open Cydia
2. Search for “StartDial”
3. Download the tweak and when prompted by Cydia, respring your iPhone.
4. Congratulations! StartDial should now be installed on your device.

How to remove StartDial:
1. Open Cydia
2. Search for “StartDial”
3. In the upper right-hand corner, select the “Modify” button.
4. When asked to “Reinstall” or “Remove”, select “Remove”
5. When prompted by Cydia, respring your iPhone.
6. Once the iPhone has resprung, StartDial should no longer be present.

Question:
What page in the Phone app do you use most often?

Verizon to Offer $30 Unlimited Data Plan for iPhone 4

The Wall Street Journal recently reported their conversation with Verizon Wireless COO and soon-to-be CEO, Lowell McAdam, regarding the iPhone 4 data plan:

“I’m not going to shoot myself in the foot,” he said. Not offering an unlimited plan would put up a barrier for customers who might otherwise switch from AT&T, he said. The country’s No. 2 carrier still has millions of subscribers grandfathered into unlimited plans they signed up for before AT&T switched to tiered pricing last summer.

But you’d better act fast. Speaking later Tuesday morning, Mr. McAdam said the iPhone unlimited plan will be a temporary offer and that the carrier will follow AT&T’s move to tiered pricing in the not too distant future.

Asthe iPhone 4′s data plan pricing is now confirmed, TechGeec will have full coverage of Verizon’s iPhone which will be released February 10.

screwgate

Screwgate: Apple Begins Changing Screws on iPhone 4

Apple has always preferred their products to remain their products even after they have been sold. For example, Apple continues to play the “cat and mouse” game with the iPhone Dev-Team to try to prevent jailbreaking as well as pouncing on companies who sell white iPhone 4 conversion kits. This common behavior in Apple has shown once again as they now replace the common #00 Phillips screws used in many of their products, specifically the iPhone 4, with new 5-pointed tamper-resistant pentalobe screws. These are extremely uncommon and are meant to keep iPhone 4 users out of their phones. Some might argue that it’s their products and that they should use whatever products they feel work best. The problem isn’t necessarily that they are producing new iPhone 4s with these screws, but that when customers bring their iPhone 4s into Apple stores for repairs, they are returned with these new screws in place. Also, if your warranty has expired or had been voided, you will need to perform these upgrades yourself. While in some cases you shouldn’t be tampering with the internals of your iPhone, it’s your phone and if you need to do a repair on it, with these new screws you simply can’t.

If for some reason you need to remove these tamper-resistant screws, the drivers are not only rare but expensive. In response to this, iFixit has created a $9.95 “iPhone 4 Liberation Kit“, which contains a Pentalobular driver to remove the new screws, two #00 Phillips screws to replace them with, and a corresponding Philips driver. The only downside, however, is that removing the Pentalobular screws may cause them to be unusable; but in the end, that’s essentially the whole point of replacing them.

[BREAKING] Verizon iPhone 4 Coming Febuary 3

Verizon concluded their event held on Tuesday, January 11, 2011, where they announced that the iPhone 4 would be available on their CDMA network. The iPhone is the iPhone 4, however, the breaks in the aluminum siding for the antenna seem to have been rearranged – possibly to address the antennagate issue.

The Verizon iPhone 4 will cost $199 for the 16GB version and $299 for the 32GB version with the capability of it acting as a mobile hotspot for up to 5 additional devices. It is availalbe for pre-order for existing Verizon customers on February 3 and for the general public on February 10 online and in Verizon and Apple stores. Unfotunately it won’t be running on Verizon’s new incredibly fast 4G LTE network. Instead, it will run on 3G, although, being as how a new iPhone will be announced around June, that one might have the capability of running on the 4G LTE network. Other than those new facts, it will have the same features/looks as the current iPhone 4.

We will have full coverage of the Verizon iPhone 4 on February 10. Stay tuned.

Verizon iPhone Coming January 11

Verizon has just sent out invitations for a keynote address to be held in New York City Tuesday, January 11th at 11:00 A.M. The topic of the event is currently unknown at the moment but the usual speculation of this is the Verizon iPhone. Now every event most people always assume the Verizon iPhone and it is getting old, but this time it is the real deal. This is why:

1. AppAdvice.com Claims:

Quote (via AppAdvice):

“More precisely, Verizon invited some unusual people to the event, like MG Siegler from Techcrunch, a self-proclaimed Apple Fanboy, as well as Jim Dalrymple of The Loop, who exclusively covers Apple news. Both are not usually invited for Verizon events. Then, we should also point out that Gizmodo hasn’t been invited, which is unprecedented for a Verizon event according to them. They believe this might have something to do with the fact that they’re persona non grata over at Apple ever since they leaked the iPhone 4.”

2. Verizon did not invite Gizmodo, now Gizmodo is always invited to all Verizon Keynotes, but they are now banned from Apple Events ever since they got the leaked iPhone 4, and they were not invited this time so that makes us lead that this event is focused on Apple.

3. The WSJ Reported:

Quote (via The Wall Street Journal):

Breaking: We’ve confirmed that Verizon will announce on Tuesday that the iPhone is coming to its network”

Another “clue” that we haven’t figured out is that it will be announces at 1/11/11 at 11:00 A.M. If you can figure out the clue, email me at conner@techgeec.com

So this all leads up to believe that their is a 90% chance that their will be a Verizon iPhone announce.

21M iPhones Q1

Apple to Ship 21 Million iPhones Q1 2011 – CDMA

Sources with Foxconn claim that Apple has raised it’s global shipment goal for the first quarter of next year from 19 million iPhones to 20-21 million.

The first-quarter shipment goal for WCDMA iPhones has been adjusted from 13 million units to 14-15 million units, the sources said. The shipment goal for CDMA iPhones, which will be launched in North America and Asia Pacific in the first quarter, is set at 5-6 million units, the sources added.

The sources also indicate that the estimated total iPhone sales in Q4 of 2010 are 15.5 million bringing the total iPhone sales of 2010 to 47 million.

Currently, Foxconn is the only maker of WCDMA iPhones, while Foxconn and Pegatron Technology have equally shared the production volume for the CDMA version, the sources noted.

Rumors are continuously emerging about a CDMA iPhone 4 being released early next year. While these sources claim that Verizon will not be the exclusive CDMA carrier of the iPhone internationally, they suggest nothing about them being the sole carrier in the U.S. which could lead to a significant dip in sales for Verizon’s U.S. CDMA competitor, Sprint.

To stay up-to-date all on the news at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (January 6-9), be sure to follow iEnlive as TechGeec.com will be partnering with them to bring our readers the best coverage possible.

Editor’s Opinion: Will Apple be launching this new version of the iPhone at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show? While many sources claim the CDMA iPhone will be launched early January, few suggest it will be at the CES which Apple will not be attending. However, Verizon’s CEO, Ivan Seidenberg, is scheduled for a keynote at the CES on January 6 where they are rumored to announce new phones. I’ve received numerous questions asking if the iPhone will be launched at the CES and my gut feeling is, unfortunately, no. Of course, being a Verizon customer and an iPhone admirer, I would love to see the CDMA iPhone launched by Seidenberg in a little more than a week but I don’t see it happening. With regards to the iPhone, Apple has been the only company to have conferences, not even AT&T has had one regarding the iPhone. So if this rumored CDMA iPhone will simply be a CDMA-compatible iPhone 4, I believe there’s a chance of it’s announcement at the CES 2011. On the other hand if it will be a whole new design, I have much doubt that it will be announced by Verizon. For those who want an easier-to-follow opinion, 30% chance not being announced at the CES 2011, 45% chance Apple will announce it sometime in Q1 2011, 25% chance we won’t be seeing a CDMA iPhone in 2011.

If, however, the CDMA iPhone will be launched, TechGeec.com will have complete coverage on it.

How to Unlock the iPhone 4 for Use with Other Carriers (T-Mobile)

Unlocking an iPhone allows one to use it with an unsupported wireless carrier, for example, T-Mobile, in the U.S. The iPhone Dev-Team has released an unlock for the iPhone 4 using the baseband 01.59.
