New and First Google Voice App is Out!

A third-party Google Voice app has just hit the App Store. GV Connect by Andreas Amann is a native app that is able to interact directly with Google Voice accounts and features.

GV Connect features:

• Place calls using your Google Voice number rather than your mobile number – enter number directly, select a contact from your device’s contacts, or call back any number in your history.
• Send and receive text messages (SMS) from your Google Voice number.
• Listen to voicemails and recorded conversations right on your device (allowing you to pause, rewind, or fast forward to any point within the message) – voicemails will also show the transcription of the message when available.
• Mark messages as starred, attach notes to conversations, block/unblock senders, or delete conversations.
• Easily search in your history by contact, message, or note.
• Messages are stored on your device for offline access.
• Composing notes and text messages can be done in landscape mode.
• Quickly change various Google Voice account settings (call forwarding, do-not-disturb, message notifications, …) directly from within the application.
• Automatic checking for new messages while the application is active.
• Direct access to your device’s contacts without needing to synchronize them with Google
• All communication is done with the Google Voice website directly, no need to hand over your account information to a third-party.
• Full support for fast app switching in iOS4 and high-resolution graphics for retina displays.

GV Connect is available in the App Store now for $2.99.

Does this indicate that the revised App Store approval guidelines have paved the way for Google Voice apps — or even an official one directly from Google — to make their way to the App Store? And, does this mean that Sean Kovacs’ GV Mobile will have a chance to make its way back from getting the axe? We’ll just have to see, but it looks very promising.

Jailbreakers – Stay Away from iOS 4.1

As many of you probably know, today Apple released a new firmware for the iPhone and iPod touch, iOS 4.1. If you are currently jailbroken and would like to keep your jailbreak, do not update! There is currently two known ways to jailbreak this firmware, one way would be through redsn0w, another and much more simplistic way, is through an updated version of jailbreakme.com. Right now we’re just waiting on Comex, creator of jailbreakme, to release the jailbreak(s). Here’s the newest post from the iPhone Dev-Team regarding iOS 4.1:

This time of year there are lots of new iPhone owners, and not everybody knows that accepting new iOS updates is the surest way to lose your jailbreak and/or unlock.  While those of you who have Cydia or TinyUmbrella backups of your FW hashes will always be able to get back to 4.0.1 if you make this mistake, this doesn’t hold for unlockers. There’s currently no known way to revert your baseband — if you update your baseband you’ll lose the ultrasn0w unlock, possible forever.

Please stay away from this 4.1 release until a safe jailbreak procedure (which also preserves ultrasn0w) is developed and released.

P.S.  There are a tiny number of iPhone3G owners who can revert their basebands due to a flaw in very early bootloaders…you will already know if you fit in this category!

Offcial Twitter App Goes Universal Finally!

Great news, Twitter fans! The official Twitter application, which we’ve known and loved on our iPhone handsets for some time now, has just gone universal. A recent update (version 3.1, which was released today) means iPad owners can now use the app on their 9.7″ iDevices.

And, as you can see from the screenshots below, the familiar app looks markedly different on the iPad. First up, it takes advantage of the iPad’s screen brilliantly. Twitter on the iPad displays your timeline in the center of the screen, adding helpful lists at the side when in landscape mode. By tapping on any tweet, related content will open in the foreground. By sliding panels, you can swiftly navigate through this content.

In addition to this, users can pinch on a tweet to reveal information and further actions. A two finger drag opens up a list of reply options. These new features are simple but very helpful, and we’re sure you’ll really appreciate them.

So, the ultimate question: was Twitter’s universality something worth waiting for? In my opinion, yes, it was. And, let’s not forget this is a free application, so you have no excuse not to download it!

New Apple Media Event on Sept. 1, 2010

Today, August 25, 2010, Apple announced that they will be holding a music-based media event on September 1, 2010, much like they do every year. Here are some of the products we expect them to announce:

  • New touch-screen iPod shuffle
  • New iPod touch with front-facing (and possibly back-facing) camera to allow for use with Face Time over WiFi (to be used with email addresses as opposed to phone numbers), Retina Display, 1Gz processor (with maybe 512MB RAM), and better battery life.
  • iOS4 for iPad
  • iTV (revamped Apple TV) with it’s own App Store and might be the size of the iPhone 4 – Price: $99 USD

Sorry, no Verizon iPhone will be announced in September. If there will be one, it will be announced in January (most likely). Again, these are all just rumors so nothing is certain for sure, but these products will be very likely to be announced.

ProSwitcher, Multifl0w, & Circuitous Alternative for iOS 4 (ALL DEVICES)

As we all know, Apple decided to come out with their own version of multitasking in iOS4. The problem is that it’s not “true” multitasking. In this tutorial, I will explain how to use Apple’s multitasking bar with Backgrounder. This disables Apple’s multitasking and replaces it with Backgrounder’s multitasking.

This is great for older iDevices with 128MB RAM (iPod touch 1G, iPod touch 2G, iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G) because they don’t support Apple’s multitasking but it will still work perfectly using this method.


Steps:

1. Open Cydia and download Backgrounder
2. Open Backgrounder and go to Global. Make sure “Backgrounder” is checked as ‘Backgrounding Method’ and “Fall Back to Native” is TURNED OFF

3. SSH into the directory: /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app
4. Locate the N72AP.plist (or N82AP.plist)
5. Backup the .plist file. Edit your .plist in any text editing software and add the following key after <dict> and before </dict>:

<key>multitasking</key>
<true/>

6. Copy the newly edited .plist file back to the directory on your iDevice (OR save it if you edited it straight from your SSH client) and REBOOT.
7. Open Cydia and download a package, “Remove Recents”.
8. Respring (or reboot if you don’t know how to respring).

Photoshop Mobile Gets a New Name and Goes Universal for All Devices

I just want to say first off I didn’t even know they were going to release this today. I was on my iPad and went to download the iPhone version of the app and BAM! There was a universal Photoshop app. So lets get into the review.

Adobe has given their once iPhone-only Photoshop app a bit of an overhaul. Not only has it received a name change, going from Photoshop.com Mobile to the more appealing Adobe Photoshop Express, but it’s now a universal app that sports iPad-specific features.

Adobe Photoshop Express now allows iPad users to edit and upload their photos with ease.  The optimized UI gives you the ability to apply effects, borders and artistic filters with only a few taps, crop, rotate, straighten or flip by simply dragging your finger, and just do so much more with your photos.  Photos can be uploaded to Adobe’s own Photoshop.com to be shared, or you can take the Facebook route.

But this isn’t merely an expanded iPhone app clone, it contains features specific to the iPad as well, including:

• Support for portrait and landscape orientations
• Redesigned Online, Edit, and Upload workflows
• Ability to work on multiple photos in sequence from within a single workflow
• Redesigned Organizer view with simplified album sharing
• Updated icons and visuals that make it easier to navigate and use the Editor
• Ability to upload to Photoshop.com and Facebook simultaneously

It definitely isn’t a full-fledged Photoshop experience with layers and all, but it does the job while on the go.

Apparently the iPad version isn’t perfect, however, as some users are reporting issues when launching the app:

“We have received reports of some users having difficulty launching the application on an iPad in landscape orientation with certain productivity and printing applications installed. We are investigating these reports. In the interim, you can work around the problem by launching the application in a portrait orientation on the iPad. We are continuing to investigate and will post an update to address these issues as soon as possible.”

I have yet to experience the issue myself, but if you are unlucky enough to, just do as Adobe states and launch it in portrait mode for the time being.

Adobe Photoshop Express is available in the App Store for free.

Fix PDF Security Holes Without Updating to iOS 4.0.2/3.2.2

iOS 4.0.2 for iPhone/iPod touch and iOS 3.2.2 for iPad was released yesterday, fixing the security hole that @comex exploited in order to revive JailbreakMe.com. However, for whatever the reason may be, iPhone neglected to release the new firmware for the iPhone 2G and iPod touch 1G. If you’re an owner of either of those two devices, you can easily patch the security hole with Saurik‘s (creator of Cydia) new patch via Cydia (you must be jailbroken). You can also install this patch on all other iDevices (and on all other firmwares from 2.x on up) if you choose not to update to the new firmware and lose your jailbreak.

To install Saurik’s patch, open Cydia and search for the package named ‘PDF Patch’.

Apple Releases iOS 4.0.2 for iPhone/iPod touch and iOS 3.2.2 for iPad

All this fixes is the PDF Exploit and nothing else. So if you require a jailbreak or unlock do not upgrade. I read the terms and that is all that is in the new update. It is available for All iDevices.

It might have taken some time, but Apple just got around to finally pushing out a new version of iOS that fixes the recently revealed exploit that allowed the jailbreakme.com jailbreak.

That’s all it really does, so there isn’t much to be excited about. It comes in two flavors: 4.0.2 for the iPhone and 3.2.2 for the iPad. Should you install it? Well, it’s hard to say. On one hand, it will kill your ability to jailbreak, at least for the time being. Which is unfortunate. On the other hand, it fixes an important security hole that could be exploited by some hackers to do who-knows-what to your iDevice. The decision is yours.
